ISTANBUL, May 26 (Xinhua) -- Turkish police detained 33 suspects on Monday over their alleged links to a failed coup in simultaneous operations across five cities, the Chief Prosecutor's Office in Izmir said in a statement.
Arrest warrants had been issued for 41 suspects believed to be funding the network known as the Gulen movement, which the Turkish government holds responsible for the failed coup attempt on July 15, 2016, read the statement.
The operations are still ongoing to apprehend the remaining individuals, read the statement, adding that financial transactions totaling 40 million Turkish liras (some 1.03 million U.S. dollars) were uncovered in the suspects' accounts.
The Gulen movement, led by Turkish preacher Fethullah Gulen, who passed away in 2024 in the United States, has been accused by the Turkish government of masterminding the coup attempt, which resulted in the deaths of over 250 people.
Turkish authorities have conducted extensive arrests over the years, detaining thousands of people allegedly linked to the movement. ■
