TEHRAN, May 27 (Xinhua) -- Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Monday applauded the ceasefire between Pakistan and India, the official news agency IRNA reported.
Iran considered ensuring sustainable security in the region and promoting friendly relations with and among neighbors as among its common interests, said Pezeshkian at a joint press conference with visiting Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
Following four days of military strikes on each other, Pakistan and India announced earlier this month a ceasefire. The clashes began after India launched airstrikes on Pakistani targets to avenge the killing of 26 people by gunmen in Pahalgam town, about 89 km east of Srinagar, the summer capital of the Indian-controlled Kashmir.
New Delhi blamed Islamabad for supporting the gunmen, a charge denied by Islamabad.
Pezeshkian said the resolution of differences through dialogue and peaceful means was the prerequisite for ensuring sustainable development and security in the region and world.
Describing the talks between the two countries' delegations as "constructive," Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that Pakistan sought to reach agreements with Iran in the areas of trade and economy.
The prime minister said that Pakistan sought peace and pursued it through dialogue. Islamabad was willing to resolve certain issues with India, such as the one regarding the Kashmir region, based on the United Nations Security Council's resolutions.
Sharif also voiced support for Iran's right to develop peaceful nuclear energy.
Heading a high-ranking delegation, the Pakistani prime minister arrived in Tehran on Monday. ■
