BEIRUT, May 26 (Xinhua) -- UN Women Lebanon has launched a two-year initiative aimed at improving women's rights, safety and economic participation, targeting 4,600 crisis-affected women across the country, Lebanon's National News Agency (NNA) reported on Monday.

Funded by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the project will offer short-term income opportunities through cash-for-work programmes, alongside skills development aimed at fostering sustainable livelihoods, according to the NNA.

The initiative will also provide a range of protection services, including gender-based violence awareness, psychosocial support, legal aid, and referral services for survivors and women at risk. Additional support will be directed to women-led businesses impacted by Lebanon's ongoing economic collapse.

Priority will be given to women with disabilities and Syrian refugees, the agency said.

"This project is about restoring dignity, rebuilding livelihoods, and amplifying the leadership of women in Lebanon's recovery," said Gielan Elmessiri, UN Women representative in Lebanon.

Lebanon has faced a prolonged financial and political crisis since 2019, pushing millions into poverty and heightening risks for women and other vulnerable groups.
