NEW DELHI, May 26 (Xinhua) -- A Naxal commander was killed and another arrested Monday during a fierce gunfight in the eastern state of Jharkhand, the police said.
The gunfight broke out in the forests of Latehar district, about 108 km northwest of Ranchi, the capital city of Jharkhand.
"Following intelligence information about the presence of some Naxals in the forests of Karamkhad and Dauna of Latehar, a police contingent launched a search operation last night in the area. During the searches that continued until early Monday, a gunfight was triggered after Naxals present there fired upon the policemen," a police official said. "During the stand-off, one Naxal commander was killed and another arrested on the spot."
The police also claimed the recovery of two assault rifles from the spot. According to officials, the police force has not suffered any damage while fighting these Naxals. ■
