BEIJING, May 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed lower on Friday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.94 percent to 3,348.37 points.
The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.85 percent lower at 10,132.41 points.
The combined turnover of these two indices stood at about 1.16 trillion yuan (about 161.29 billion U.S. dollars), up from 1.1 trillion yuan on the previous trading day.
Shares related to controlled nuclear fusion, precious metals, and medical services led the gains, while those in the sectors of shipping ports, gaming, computing power, and electricity were among the biggest losers.
The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, lost 1.18 percent to close at 2,021.5 points Friday. ■
