SYDNEY, May 23 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese Consulate General in Sydney on Friday urged Chinese citizens to remain vigilant and take appropriate safety precautions after local media reported a recent street attack in eastern Sydney.
In a safety advisory, the consulate asked Chinese citizens and students to closely monitor local news and updates, pay attention to the security situation in their surroundings, enhance personal safety awareness, strengthen self-protection measures, and avoid going out at night whenever possible.
The Chinese mission also said in a warning earlier on Friday that there have been some violent acts in the Australian state of New South Wales (NSW) recently against ethnic Chinese and international students from China.
The consulate said it attaches great importance to this issue, and firmly opposes and strongly condemns violent acts, vowing to do its utmost to take effective measures to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese citizens in the consular district.
Two girls have been charged over the assault of a man and woman in Sydney's eastern suburbs on Wednesday, NSW Police Force said in a statement on Thursday.
The couple, a 42-year-old woman and a 40-year-old man, were assaulted by a group of about seven teenagers inside the courtyard of a unit complex in Sydney's eastern suburbs of Eastgardens.
The pair were taken to Maroubra Police Station where they were treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics for facial injuries, police said. They were later taken to a hospital, and have since been discharged.
Following extensive inquiries two 12-year-old girls were arrested on Thursday in Sydney's eastern suburbs. They were taken to Maroubra Police Station, and each charged with one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm in company of other(s) and affray.
Both have been granted conditional bail to appear at a children's court on June 19, 2025, according to the police statement.
The Seven Network's broadcast news service of 7NEWS said the 42-year-old woman moved from Shanghai, China, just over a year ago.
The entire attack was caught on camera by a resident in an upstairs unit. After the video was posted online, many viewers claimed that they recognized the same group had targeted several victims, most of whom are Asian, the 7NEWS reported. ■
