DAMASCUS, May 22 (Xinhua) -- Syria and Türkiye signed a cooperation agreement on Thursday to enhance energy collaboration, including electricity and gas transfers, Syrian state news agency SANA reported.

The agreement was signed in Damascus by Syrian energy sector's chief Mohammed al-Bashir and visiting Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar.

Speaking at a joint press conference, al-Bashir said the two sides were finalizing procedures to complete the 400-kilovolt transmission line that would link the Turkish and Syrian power grids.

"We expect the electricity connection between Syria and Türkiye to be operational by the end of the year," al-Bashir said.

Bayraktar announced that Türkiye will provide Syria with six million cubic meters of natural gas per day and supply 1,000 megawatts of electricity.

He said that Syria had been focusing on rebuilding efforts since December last year and energy had been a top priority.
