VIENTIANE, May 22 (Xinhua) -- Laos' Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment held a consultation meeting to revise the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) 2026-2030, aiming to develop a comprehensive strategy that strengthens biodiversity conservation and promotes its sustainable use nationwide.
The meeting, held in southern Laos' Champasak province from Wednesday to Thursday, brought together representatives from the Lao Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and the United Nations Development Program.
Despite efforts by local authorities, implementing biodiversity conservation in Laos remains challenging. The meeting aims to share experience and identify solutions, Lao National Radio reported on Thursday.
Rich in biodiversity and home to many unique species, Laos recognizes the vital role biodiversity plays in providing essential ecosystem services such as food, medicine, employment, and clean water.
The Lao government is working closely with development partners to develop the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan 2026-2030, ensuring it aligns with the targets of the Convention on Biological Diversity.
The first draft of the revised National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan has already been completed following consultations in the northern and central regions.
During the meeting, a brief overview of the action plan and its revised draft was presented, including information on Laos' biodiversity, global biodiversity trends, and an analysis of the country's efforts in biodiversity conservation and sustainable use. ■
