JERUSALEM, May 22 (Xinhua) -- Israel's military said on Thursday it intercepted a missile launched from Yemen toward Israel, triggering air raid sirens across central Israel, including Tel Aviv, and sending millions of residents to shelters overnight.
"A missile launched from Yemen was intercepted," the military said in a statement, adding that sirens were activated "in accordance with protocol."
The missile, launched before dawn, also prompted sirens at Ben Gurion Airport, Israel's main international gateway. Landings were temporarily halted, and several inbound flights were delayed in the air, the Israeli Ynet news site reported.
Israel's Magen David Adom rescue service said no injuries were reported.
Houthi forces in Yemen have pledged to cease attacks on U.S. vessels but have continued launching missiles toward Israel, citing solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza, where a 19-month Israeli offensive killed more than 53,000 people, according to figures from Gaza health authorities.
Israel has conducted a series of retaliatory airstrikes in Yemen, including a strike earlier in May on the capital, Sanaa, which damaged the country's main international airport and killed several people. ■
