TOKYO, May 22 (Xinhua) -- The number of foreign visitors to Japan hit a single-month record of 3.91 million in April, up 28.5 percent from the same month last year, according to a Japan National Tourism Organization report.
The monthly figure topped the previous record of 3.78 million set in January this year, the report showed Wednesday.
The organization attributes the record number partly to high travel demand during the country's cherry blossom season and Easter holidays overseas.
For the first four months of the year, Japan received about 14.45 million foreign visitors, a 24.5 percent increase from the same period in 2024.
Foreign arrivals surpassed 36 million last year, with Japanese authorities struggling to address overcrowding in popular areas and encourage tourists to disperse into the countryside.
The number of foreign visitors this year may reach 45 million or 46 million, Japan Tourism Agency Commissioner Naoya Haraikawa told a press conference. ■
