OTTAWA, May 20 (Xinhua) -- Canada's Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 1.7 percent year over year in April, down from a 2.3 percent increase in March, Statistics Canada said on Tuesday.

The slowdown in April was driven by lower energy prices, which fell 12.7 percent following a 0.3 percent decline in March, said the national statistical agency.

Excluding energy, the CPI rose 2.9 percent in April, following a 2.5 percent increase in March, said the agency.

On a monthly basis, the CPI fell 0.1 percent in April, said Statistics Canada.
