KUWAIT CITY, May 20 (Xinhua) -- The Kuwaiti Al-Sadu Society on Monday celebrated the World Crafts Council's designation of Kuwait City as the World Craft City for Al-Sadu Weaving, honoring the centuries-old Bedouin textile tradition and underlining efforts to preserve this unique art form.
The celebrations will run from Monday to Thursday. "This art embodies the spirit of Kuwaiti authenticity and reflects the skill of Bedouin women in transforming wool and natural materials into artistic masterpieces," said Sheikha Bibi Duaij Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, chairwoman of the board of directors of the Sadu Crafts Association.
"This global recognition motivates us to continue working to protect this heritage and pass it on to future generations," she added.
Saad Al-Qaddoumi, president of the council, told Xinhua, "Today is a special historic day for the State of Kuwait, as it has become a global craft city for Sadu weaving."
Sadu weaving has long been a symbol of desert life and nomadic culture. ■
