The White House criticized retail giant Walmart recently for suggesting price hikes as a result of the soaring tariffs, demanding it "eat the tariffs" instead of passing them on to customers.
The U.S. government has similarly warned domestic automakers to not raise their prices, even though outside analyses say the tariffs would raise production costs.
So far, those tariffs have darkened the mood of an otherwise resilient U.S. economy.
