COLOMBO, May 19 (Xinhua) -- 1,007 people have lost their lives in road accidents in Sri Lanka so far this year, Police Media Spokesperson Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Buddhika Manatunga told media on Monday.

He said these deaths occurred in 944 fatal accidents that were reported between Jan. 1 and May 18, adding that the main causes of these accidents were negligence, drunk driving, reckless driving, and poor vehicle maintenance.

The police are carrying out a nationwide initiative aimed at reducing traffic accidents, which include driver awareness programs, he said.

In 2024, 2,541 deaths were recorded from 2,403 fatal road accidents in the country, according to the police.
