ULAN BATOR, May 19 (Xinhua) -- A total of 89 forest and steppe fires have been registered across Mongolia since the beginning of this year, burning 748,802 hectares of land, the country's National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said Monday.
The wildfires have caused total losses of 4.3 billion Mongolian tugriks (around 1.2 million U.S. dollars), according to NEMA.
Experts said the main causes of natural fires are careless handling of fire by citizens, as well as deliberate burning of grass and debris.
Due to the dry and windy weather conditions in most parts of Mongolia, in the spring of 2025, there is a high risk of sudden forest-steppe fires, the agency said, urging the public to prevent possible wildfires. ■
