SEOUL, May 16 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's export volume grew for the third successive month due to strong demand for electronic and metal products, central bank data showed Friday.

The export volume index gained 7.7 percent in April from a year earlier after mounting 2.6 percent in February and 3.2 percent in March, according to the Bank of Korea (BOK).

In terms of volume, outbound shipment for computers, electronic and optical devices jumped 18.0 percent in April on a yearly basis, keeping a double-digit expansion for the second straight month.

Export volume for metal products surged 18.4 percent, but those for machinery and transport equipment retreated in single digits.

The export value index swelled 3.1 percent in April compared with the same month of last year, keeping an upward trend for the third consecutive month.

The import volume index rose 2.2 percent in the cited month, but the import value index reduced 3.2 percent owing to lower price for raw materials.

The net terms-of-trade index for goods, or a ratio of export price to import price, was up 1.2 percent in April on a yearly basis on the back of a faster fall in import price than export price.
