KUALA LUMPUR, May 16 (Xinhua) -- Malaysia's current account balance recorded a surplus of 16.7 billion ringgit (3.91 billion U.S. dollars) in the first quarter of 2025, equivalent to 3.4 percent of the country's gross domestic product, official data showed Friday.

The Department of Statistics Malaysia said in a statement that this improvement was primarily supported by net exports of goods and a smaller deficit in secondary income.

Meanwhile, the financial account registered a net outflow of 20.3 billion ringgit, mainly attributed to higher outflows in portfolio investment.

Foreign direct investment recorded a net inflow of 15.6 billion ringgit, while direct investment abroad posted a net outflow of 3.5 billion ringgit for the quarter. (1 ringgit equals 0.23 U.S. dollars)
