JAKARTA, May 15 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia posted a 6.4 percent year-on-year rise in foreign debt to 430.4 billion U.S. dollars in the first quarter of 2025, the country's central bank said on Thursday.

The rise was mainly driven by the public sector, which stood at 206.9 billion dollars, up 7.6 percent.

"The rise in government foreign debt was influenced by loan withdrawals and an increase in external capital inflows into government securities, driven by investor confidence in Indonesia's economic prospects," said Ramdan Denny Prakoso, executive director of Bank Indonesia's Communication Department, in a press release.

Meanwhile, private external debt contracted by 1.2 percent to 195.5 billion dollars in the January-March period, due to a decline in the non-financial corporate sector, reflecting a slower contraction than in the previous quarter.

The central bank noted that overall, Indonesia's foreign debt structure remains sound, with a debt-to-GDP ratio of 30.6 percent and long-term debt making up 84.7 percent of the total, reflecting prudent debt management practices.
