BERLIN, May 15 (Xinhua) -- Holocaust survivor Margot Friedlaender was laid to rest on Thursday in a Jewish cemetery in Berlin, Germany.

German Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Chancellor Friedrich Merz joined Friedlaender's relatives at the funeral.

Friedlaender passed away last Friday at the age of 103. As one of the most prominent witnesses of the Holocaust, she went into hiding during the Nazi extermination of Jews in Berlin but was ultimately betrayed and deported to a concentration camp. She survived, though her entire family was murdered.

After decades of living in New York as an emigrant, Friedlaender returned to Germany. An honorary citizen of Berlin, she devoted her life to Holocaust remembrance, especially among younger generations.

According to German media, former Federal President Joachim Gauck, former Chancellor Angela Merkel, and her successor Olaf Scholz were also among the mourners.
