JAKARTA, May 15 (Xinhua) -- Indonesian authorities blocked more than 1.3 million online gambling-related contents from October 2024 to mid-May 2025 across various platforms, a government official said here on Thursday.
"Out of the 1.3 million contents, 1.2 million came from online gambling sites, while the rest were gambling advertisements spread across online platforms," Alexander Sabar, director general of digital space supervision at the Ministry of Communication and Digital, told reporters.
Indonesia has been intensifying efforts to eradicate online gambling in recent years. Sabar stated that the blocking was another measure taken to combat the rampant spread of online gambling in the country's digital space.
"This online gambling practice has eroded productivity, devastated family finances, and harmed the future of the younger generation. Based on government data, without intervention, potential losses from online gambling could reach around 1,000 trillion rupiahs by the end of 2025," he noted. (1 U.S. dollar equals 16,510 rupiahs) ■
