WASHINGTON, May 13 (Xinhua) -- The United States on Tuesday announced an arms deal worth nearly 142 billion U.S. dollars with Saudi Arabia, calling it "the largest defense sales agreement in history."
The White House said in a press release that U.S. will provide the Middle East country "with state-of-the-art warfighting equipment and services from over a dozen U.S. defense firms."
The arms sales cover five categories, including air force advancement and space capabilities, air and missile defense, maritime and coastal security, border security and land forces modernization, and information and communication systems upgrades, said the press release.
The package also includes extensive training and support to build the capacity of the Saudi armed forces, including enhancement of Saudi service academies and military medical services.
The package is part of Saudi Arabia's 600-billion dollars commitment to invest in the United States, according to the White House. ■
