TOKYO, May 9 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks rose Friday as a trade agreement between the United States and Britain boosted hopes for progress in Washington's tariff negotiations with other trading partners.

Japan's benchmark Nikkei stock index, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average, ended up 574.70 points, or 1.56 percent, from Thursday at 37,503.33, closing above the 37,000 threshold for the first time since March 28.

The broader Topix index, meanwhile, finished 34.77 points, or 1.29 percent, higher at 2,733.49.

On the stock market, a broad range of issues were bought as investors welcomed the trade agreement, the first deal announced since U.S. President Donald Trump imposed hefty tariffs on a number of trading partners, analysts said.

Gains were also boosted by export-oriented auto issues on a weaker yen, which increases exporters' overseas profits when repatriated.
