VIENNA, May 8 (Xinhua) -- Austria recorded a foreign trade surplus of approximately 40 million euros (45.2 million U.S. dollars) in February, as exports declined while imports grew, Statistics Austria reported on Thursday.

According to preliminary figures, the value of goods exports dropped by 3.3 percent year-on-year to 16.21 billion euros. In contrast, imports rose by 3.2 percent to 16.17 billion euros during the same period.

The surplus was driven largely by trade with fellow European Union (EU) member states. In February, Austria imported goods worth 10.69 billion euros from the EU and exported goods valued at 10.95 billion euros, resulting in a positive trade balance of 260 million euros, Statistics Austria noted.

Austria's four leading export product groups -- machinery and vehicles, processed goods, chemical products, and other manufactured goods -- collectively saw a 4.3 percent year-on-year decline in exports, totaling 13.47 billion euros.

On the import side, two of these key sectors showed growth, with chemical products registering the highest absolute increase at 18.4 percent.

Over the first two months of 2025, Austrian imports rose by 2.7 percent while exports fell by 2.3 percent compared to the same period last year, according to the statistics agency. (1 euro = 1.13 U.S. dollar)
