MANILA, May 7 (Xinhua) -- The number of deaths due to land transport accidents rose to 13,125 in 2023, the highest recorded in over a decade and accounting for 1.9 percent of all deaths nationwide, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) said Wednesday.

The number translated to a 7.2 percent increase from 2022, where 12,240 deaths were recorded, the PSA said in a statement.

Based on sex and age group, males remained disproportionately affected by road crashes, consistently making up more than 80 percent of the total land transport deaths, the data showed.

Young adults aged 20 to 24 consistently recorded the highest number of road crash deaths from 2010 to 2023, accounting for 12.4 percent to 13.9 percent of deaths each year, the PSA said.

From 2010 to 2023, the largest number of road crash-related deaths each year occurred consistently in the month of December, ranging from 9.5 percent to 11.8 percent of annual fatalities, with the exception of 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, when it ranked second, next to January, the PSA said.
