DAR ES SALAAM, May 5 (Xinhua) -- Tanzania's standards regulator has burned 43 tonnes of imported substandard cosmetics and second-hand underwear.

Candida Shirima, acting director general of the Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS), said on Monday that the burnt cosmetics and second-hand underwear were seized between July 2024 and February 2025.

Shirima, also the TBS director for compliance and enforcement, said the substandard cosmetics and underwear were impounded in the Dar es Salaam, Coast, and Morogoro regions.

Shirima appealed to citizens to stop buying imported substandard cosmetics and second-hand clothing for health reasons.

She also urged importers of cosmetics and second-hand clothing to ensure that their goods meet the required standards to avoid losses from the destruction of substandard goods.

Shirima added that the TBS will continue regularly inspecting imported goods to ensure they meet the required standards.
