ADEN, Yemen, May 5 (Xinhua) -- Some 4.8 million people remain displaced across Yemen, many of whom have been forced to flee multiple times amid worsening shelter shortages and increasing risk of eviction, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reported Monday.

In a statement on X, the UN refugee agency warned that "safe shelter is out of reach" for many families, underscoring the urgent need for humanitarian assistance to address the growing vulnerability of displaced populations.

The warning comes despite a relative reduction in hostilities over the past two and a half years in Yemen's decade-long conflict between government forces and the Houthi group, which has controlled much of northern Yemen, including the capital Sanaa, since September 2014.

Humanitarian organizations continue to express concern over critical funding gaps undermining relief operations. These challenges are further compounded by widespread food insecurity, limited access to clean water, and recurring disease outbreaks.

The UNHCR called for increased international support to address the urgent shelter needs of millions of Yemenis who remain in prolonged displacement.
