AMMAN, May 4 (Xinhua) -- Jordanian authorities said on Sunday they had foiled an attempt to smuggle 16 kg of marijuana through Queen Alia International Airport in Amman.
The state-run Petra news agency, citing a joint statement from the Jordan Customs Department and the Anti-Narcotics Department, reported that the suspect was an East Asian national arriving from an unnamed Arab country.
Authorities said the passenger was flagged for suspicious behavior and subjected to a thorough search, during which the narcotics were discovered in his possession. He was taken into custody, and the seized drugs were handed over to the Anti-Narcotics Department for further legal procedures.
The operation was carried out in coordination with security agencies, the statement added.
The Jordan Customs Department reiterated its commitment to preventing the entry of banned or harmful substances at all border crossings to safeguard the kingdom. ■
