GAZA, May 2 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) said Friday that the ongoing Israeli blockade is worsening the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, particularly affecting women and children.
In a press statement marking two months since the imposition of the blockade on March 2, UNRWA said the Israeli restrictions have led to a severe deterioration in the enclave's living conditions, as essential supplies of food, medicine, and humanitarian aid remain blocked.
"With every additional day, the siege will silently kill more children and women in addition to those killed by bombardments," UNRWA added.
It warned that the blockade amounts to collective punishment against civilians, including children, women, and the elderly, calling on Israel to lift the blockade immediately and to facilitate the urgent delivery of humanitarian aid.
It also reiterated calls for the release of all hostages held since the start of the conflict in October 2023.
"It's time to show we haven't completely lost our humanity," said UNRWA, urging the rapid reopening of crossings to allow the entry of life-saving assistance.
Israel halted the entry of goods and supplies into Gaza on March 2 following the expiration of the first phase of a January ceasefire agreement with Hamas. The second phase has yet to be implemented due to a lack of consensus between the parties.
On March 18, Israel resumed its military operations in the enclave. At least 2,326 Palestinians had been killed and 6,050 others injured since Israel renewed its intensive strikes, Gaza-based health authorities said on Thursday.■
