KABUL, May 1 (Xinhua) -- Police have discovered and confiscated a huge quantity of arms and ammunition, including 90 pieces of pistols, during a series of operations in the southern Afghanistan Helmand province and detained 16 individuals over the past month, a news release of provincial police office said Thursday.
The operations covered the provincial capital Lashkar Gah and several districts during which the personnel of counter-terrorism police rounded up 98 pieces of different kinds of weapons including 90 pistols, six stocks of AK-47 assault rifles, a machine gun, 20 sets of walkie-talkie and other military equipments including hand grenades and projectiles, the news release added.
Police have also taken into custody 16 individuals on charge of keeping the arms and ammunition illegally and referred their cases to the judiciary for further investigations, the news release went on to say.
The Afghan interim government, as part of efforts to ensure peace and security in the post-war country, has vowed to collect arms and ammunition from anyone living outside the security organs. ■
