WINDHOEK, April 30 (Xinhua) -- Namibia is set to host the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) U-17 Girls' Championship from May 10 to 17, aiming to capitalize on home advantage in the regional tournament.

The Namibia Football Association (NFA) on Wednesday called up players for trials and selection for the upcoming championships.

The country's football governing body announced that a two-day trial, taking place from May 1 to 3, will host players from various regions across the country. The final squad will remain in camp to continue preparations ahead of the tournament.

According to the NFA, 15 of the players called up currently play in the Namibia Women's Super League, and several of them played at the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Schools Championship held in Walvis Bay in 2024 and the 2024 edition of the COSAFA Girls Championship.

Namibia will be hoping to improve on its performance after failing to make it out of the group stage last year in December when the tournament was hosted in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Namibia is seeded in Group A, alongside Malawi and the Comoros. The top team from each group will advance to the semifinals, along with the best second-placed team.

Namibia is the fifth nation to host the U-17 competition after Mauritius (2019), South Africa (2020, 2024), Lesotho (2021), and Malawi (2022). There was no tournament in 2023.
