COLOMBO, April 23 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's export sector showed notable growth during the first quarter of 2025, with total exports exceeding 4.2 billion U.S. dollars, an increase of 5.87 percent compared to the same period of 2024, the Export Development Board (EDB) said in a press release on Wednesday.

The EDB said that in March 2025 alone, total exports, including both merchandise and services, exceeded 1.5 billion dollars, with a year-on-year growth of 6.24 percent compared to March 2024 and a month-on-month increase of 11.76 percent compared to February 2025.

This performance highlights Sri Lanka's growing prominence in global trade and reflects the effectiveness of continuous efforts to enhance the country's export competitiveness and market access, Mangala Wijesinghe, chairman and chief executive officer of the EDB, said.

The EDB said that in the first quarter of 2025, services exports rose by 10.88 percent, reaching 887.04 million dollars, underscoring the growing importance of Sri Lanka's knowledge-based economy.

Sri Lanka achieved a record-breaking total export revenue of over 16 billion dollars in 2024.
