NEW YORK, April 16 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. dollar softened in late trading on Wednesday.

The dollar index, which measures the greenback against six major peers, lost 0.83 percent to 99.385 at 3:00 p.m. (1900 GMT).

In late New York trading, the euro was up to 1.1386 U.S. dollars from 1.1273 U.S. dollars in the previous session, and the British pound advanced to 1.3229 U.S. dollars from 1.3216 U.S. dollars in the previous session.

The U.S. dollar bought 142.10 Japanese yen, lower than 143.16 Japanese yen of the previous session. The U.S. dollar was down to 0.8143 Swiss francs from 0.8223 Swiss francs, and it lost to 1.3880 Canadian dollars from 1.3968 Canadian dollars. The U.S. dollar fell to 9.7584 Swedish kronor from 9.8931 Swedish kronor.
