NEW YORK, April 14 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. dollar softened in late trading on Monday.

The dollar index, which measures the greenback against six major peers, lost 0.46 percent to 99.640 at 3:00 p.m. (1900 GMT).

In late New York trading, the euro advanced to 1.1346 U.S. dollars from 1.1312 U.S. dollars in the previous session, and the British pound climbed to 1.3189 U.S. dollars from 1.3060 U.S. dollars in the previous session.

The U.S. dollar bought 143.04 Japanese yen, lower than 143.81 Japanese yen of the previous session. The U.S. dollar fell to 0.8144 Swiss francs from 0.8170 Swiss francs, and it declined to 1.3872 Canadian dollars from 1.3889 Canadian dollars. The U.S. dollar was down to 9.7737 Swedish kronor from 9.7920 Swedish kronor.
