THE HAGUE, April 14 (Xinhua) -- Kenyan athletes Geoffrey Kamworor and Jackline Cherono won the men's and women's races respectively in the 44th Rotterdam Marathon on Sunday.
Kamworor, 32, a two-time winner of the New York Marathon in 2017 and 2019, dropped his last rival from an initial leading group of 10 athletes, Chala Regasa, five kilometers before the finish. He crossed the line on the Coolsingel street in the center of Rotterdam in a time of 2 hours, four minutes, and 33 seconds.
Ethiopians Regasa (2:05:06) and Chimdessa Debele (2:05:26) finished in second and third place respectively.
Cherono dominated the women's race. For a long time, she appeared to be on track to break the course record of 2:18:58 set by Tiki Gelana in 2012 but didn't achieve it due to challenging final kilometers.
Cherono still set a new personal record with a time of 2:21:14. Ethiopian athletes Aminet Ahmed (2:22:14) and Azmera Gebru (2:22:15) came in second and third respectively. ■
