DAKAR, April 11 (Xinhua) -- The handover ceremony for the Chinese-assisted renovation of four stadiums in Senegal was held Friday at the Leopold Sedar Senghor Stadium in Dakar, the capital of Senegal.
This project, one of the largest Chinese-aid initiatives in Senegal, began in 2022 and included the renovation and upgrading of the Senghor Stadium in Dakar, as well as local stadiums in Kaolack, Diourbel and Ziguinchor.
"Today's event is not just a handover ceremony. It is a significant moment that reflects the strong friendship between Senegal and China," said Khady Diene Gaye, Senegal's minister of youth, sports and culture.
"Since it was first built with Chinese assistance in the 1980s, the Senghor Stadium has stood as a symbol of the deep bond between our two nations," she said, adding that "now, with its modern new look, it shines once again thanks to China's generous support and the hard work of both Chinese and Senegalese teams. This renovation not only improves the stadium's facilities but also reflects our ever-deepening cooperation in sports and culture."
Li Yan, charge d'affaires at the Chinese Embassy in Senegal, said China remains committed to supporting Senegal's economic and social development.
She expressed China's willingness "to work hand in hand with Senegal to elevate bilateral cooperation across various fields, including sports, and to usher in a new chapter of closer and more fruitful relations between the two countries." ■
