MEXICO CITY, April 7 (Xinhua) -- At least nine people were killed and five others injured on Monday in an armed assault at an addiction recovery clinic in northwestern Mexico, local authorities said.
Armed assailants attacked the clinic early Monday morning in the municipality of Culiacan in northwestern Mexico's Sinaloa state, according to the local public security secretariat.
The masked assailants, armed with high-powered rifles, forced open the clinic's gate and opened fire at patients and staff.
Local police arrived at the scene following several calls to the 911 emergency hotline, where they confirmed fatalities and injuries.
Eight people died at the scene and a wounded man died hours later after he was rushed to the hospital, the police said.
The State Attorney General's Office has launched an investigation into the shooting. ■
