TASHKENT, April 8 (Xinhua) -- Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has called for expanding multifaceted cooperation within the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), the presidential press service said in a statement on Monday.

Mirziyoyev made the remarks when addressing the opening session of the 150th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union being held from April 5-9 in the Uzbek capital. With the theme of "Parliamentary Movement for Social Progress and Justice," the event was convened for the first time in Central Asia.

The statement noted that regional conflicts pose serious threats to both global and regional peace and security, emphasizing that Uzbekistan strongly supports resolving conflicts through peaceful negotiations.

"In these matters, it is advisable to follow universally recognized norms of international law, the UN Charter, and its resolutions. In this context, Uzbekistan views the UN as the only universal international organization," the statement said.

More than 2,000 delegates from nearly 140 countries are attending the assembly. Founded in 1889, the 180-member IPU holds its assemblies twice annually.
