The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average opened at 34,304.66 points, down 431.27 points, or 1.24 percent.
The Straits Times Index opened at 3,900.20 points, down 42.03 points, or 1.07 percent.
The Korea Composite Stock Price Index opened at 2,450.49 points, down 36.21 points, or 1.46 percent.
IN THE UNITED STATES
The S&P 500 Index closed at 5,396.52 points, down 274.45 points, or 4.84 percent.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 40,545.93 points, down 1,679.39 points, or 3.98 percent.
