RIO DE JANEIRO, March 29 (Xinhua) -- Gremio scored two first-half goals to register a 2-1 home win over Atletico Mineiro in their Brazilian Serie A season opener on Saturday.
Matias Arezo headed home just after the half-hour and Edenilson extended the hosts' lead with a low finish on the stroke of halftime.
Forward Rony Barbosa reduced the deficit when he latched onto Gustavo Scarpa's cross with an unstoppable header 15 minutes from time.
But despite controlling only 32 percent of possession and having 10 fewer shots on goal, the hosts held on to secure all three points.
In other Brazilian Serie A fixtures on Sunday, Fortaleza prevailed 2-0 at home to Fluminense, Cruzeiro edged to a 2-1 home victory over Mirassol, Juventude won 2-0 at home to Vitoria and Sao Paulo was held to a goalless home draw by Sport Recife. ■
