MADRID, March 28 (Xinhua) -- Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on Friday called on U.S. President Donald Trump to "reconsider" the imposition of new tariffs and to end what he described as a "senseless" trade war.

Speaking at an event in Madrid, just two days after Trump confirmed what Sanchez called "the highest tariffs ever imposed on the European Union," the Spanish leader urged Washington to re-engage in dialogue.

"I would like to once again call on the U.S. administration to reconsider, to engage in dialogue with the European Commission, and to stop this senseless act," Sanchez said.

On Wednesday, President Trump signed an executive order to impose 25 percent tariffs on all vehicles and foreign-made auto parts imported into the United States.

"A trade war benefits no one," Sanchez said, emphasizing that Spain would respond "in a coordinated manner with our European partners."

"As a trading power, the European Union is capable of responding to the reckless actions proposed by the U.S. administration. Where some raise walls, we forge new alliances," Sanchez said.
