NEW YORK, March 29 (Xinhua) -- Columbia University interim President Katrina Armstrong resigned Friday night, a week after the university yielded to the Trump administration for negotiations over the restoration of federal funding.

Armstrong resigned with immediate effect, according to a statement from the university, adding that she is returning to the school's Irving Medical Center.

Columbia's Board of Trustees Co-Chair Claire Shipman has been appointed the new interim president.

Shipman became Columbia's third leader after protests against the war in Gaza erupted on campus in April 2024, when the university became an epicenter of protests across the United States.

During the final week of Armstrong's leadership, Columbia agreed to a list of demands from the Trump administration in order to begin negotiations on restoring 400 million U.S. dollars in federal funding that was stripped on March 7.

Other universities in the United States, such as the University of Pennsylvania, are also facing threats of federal funding pauses under the Trump administration.
