MEXICO CITY, March 27 (Xinhua) -- Mexico will give a "comprehensive response" on April 3 to a range of trade tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump's administration, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Thursday.

"We are going to give a comprehensive response to what was announced regarding steel and aluminum, to what is being announced regarding automobiles, and to what they will announce on April 2, after April 2, because we don't want to give a response to each issue, but rather a comprehensive response," Sheinbaum said.

The government will always protect Mexico because "that is our responsibility," as well as the "jobs created in Mexico and for Mexican companies," she said during her morning press conference in Mexico City.

The Trump administration has confirmed it will impose a 25 percent tariff on all automobile imports starting April 2.

"Within the Mexico, United States, Canada trade agreement, there should be no tariffs. That is the essence of the trade agreement," Sheinbaum said.

According to Mexican Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard, who participated in the press conference remotely from Washington D.C., where he has been discussing tariffs and other trade issues with the U.S. side, Mexico exports nearly 3 million cars to the U.S. each year and supplies 40 percent of all auto parts used in the United States.
