TALUQAN, Afghanistan, March 24 (Xinhua) -- Two gold miners lost their lives after a tunnel of the mine caved in northern Afghanistan's Takhar province on Sunday, the director of the public relations office of provincial police said Monday.
The miners were busy extracting gold from a mine in Khwaja Ghar district when a tunnel caved in, killing two on the spot, the official said, adding the police personnel reached the site of the incident and after recovery of the bodies handed them over to their families.
Such accidents also claimed the lives of at least six miners in Takhar and the neighboring Badakhshan province since early this year.
Lack of modern machinery in the mining sector and illegal extraction of mines by unskilled miners often lead to disasters, which claim the lives of poor miners in Afghanistan. ■
