NAIROBI, March 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese technology giant Huawei announced on Thursday that it will be at the forefront of empowering the next generation of Kenya's digital workforce through training, mentorship, and apprenticeship.

Speaking at a premier career and networking event convened by Safaricom, one of the largest telecommunications companies in East Africa, Michael Kamau, head of Huawei ICT Academy, said nurturing young talent will be key to sustaining the growth of Kenya's digital economy.

Kamau said the firm is committed to training local youth to pursue careers in the digital space, which promises decent incomes.

According to Kamau, flagship initiatives like Huawei ICT Competition and Seeds for the Future have provided Kenyan youth with a platform to upgrade their digital skills, while exposing them to cutting-edge technologies such as cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and networking.

He emphasized the need for the youth to engage with ICT industry players while in college, and tap into sponsored training programs that would prepare them for the evolving job market.

"Some of the best professionals in the job market today began networking with technology companies before graduating. This exposure is critical to success," Kamau said.

The annual career and networking event dubbed "Safaricom Decode" seeks to empower local youth, connecting them with industry leaders, providing mentorship, and offering insights into emerging trends in the digital economy.
