DAR ES SALAAM, March 17 (Xinhua) -- Tanzania's Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced on Monday that it plans to register 643,420 new voters in the Dar es Salaam Region as part of the voter registration exercise ahead of the October 2025 general elections.

Athumani Kailima, director of elections for the INEC, said the new voters represent 18.7 percent of the 3,427,917 registered voters in the Dar es Salaam Region during the 2019/2020 registration exercise.

Kailima said the registration of new voters using the biometric voter registration system in the Dar es Salaam Region began on Monday and will run until March 23. He said the INEC has established 1,757 registration and updating centers in the region, an increase of 96 centers compared to those used during the 2019/2020 exercise.

Jacobs Mwambegele, chairperson of the INEC, said the commission has completed the registration of new voters and the updating of voter records in 29 regions across Tanzania's mainland and Zanzibar.

Tanzania holds general elections every five years, during which voters elect the president, members of parliament and councilors.
