NEW YORK, Jan. 27 (Xinhua) -- Last week's historic Gulf Coast snowstorm helped lock down a rarity in the United States as all 50 states have already seen accumulating snow this winter.

"The power of the storm also created another rarity: some Southern cities have seen more snow than their Northern brethren," reported USA Today on Monday.

"Official storm totals in Lafayette and New Orleans, Louisiana; Mobile, Alabama; and Pensacola, Florida, are greater than what New York City, Philadelphia, Salt Lake City, Omaha, Nebraska; and Sioux Falls, South Dakota have seen since fall," Meteorologist Chris Dolce writes for weather.com.

Hawaii has had snow, too, but that is not a surprise, according to the report. The Big Island's Mauna Kea volcanic summit saw its first snow in late October. Snow is an annual occurrence at the summit that rises above 13,000 feet, Dolce wrote.

Dolce noted that snow on the ground at the same time is more rare accomplish, but it's happened before, including in February 2010.
