BUDAPEST, Jan. 27 (Xinhua) -- Hungarian Minister of Regional Development Tibor Navracsics described the Holocaust as the "indefensible, inexplicable low point of European civilization" during a commemoration in Budapest on Monday.

The event at the Holocaust Memorial Center marked International Holocaust Remembrance Day and the 80th anniversary of Auschwitz's liberation.

Navracsics reflected on Europe's descent into totalitarian ideologies in the 20th century, adding that Jan. 27, 1945, the day Auschwitz was liberated, represents neither the beginning nor the end of the Holocaust's impact. He recalled that antisemitism had been festering for decades before erupting into genocide and that the aftermath of the Holocaust continues to resonate through broken lives and rebuilt families.

The commemoration featured prayers by Chief Rabbi Dr. Tamas Vero and cantor Immanuel Zucker, as well as a musical performance by members of Concerto Budapest.
