NANJING, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- Yang Kening, a former senior political advisor for southwest China's Sichuan Province, stood trial on Thursday for bribery and illegal possession of guns and ammunition.
His case was heard at a court in the city of Nantong, Jiangsu Province.
Prosecutors accused Yang of taking advantage of his various posts in Sichuan to provide assistance to others in matters such as project contracting and business operations, illegally accepting money and valuables worth over 72.23 million yuan (about 10 million U.S. dollars) in return.
Yang was also accused of unlawfully obtaining guns and ammunition, and of keeping them at his residence.
At the trial, prosecutors presented evidence that was then examined by the defendant and his lawyers, and the two sides gave their respective accounts of the case, according to a court statement.
In his final statement, Yang pleaded guilty and expressed remorse. A verdict will be announced in due course. ■
