WASHINGTON, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- A spokesperson for the Joe Biden administration told reporters Tuesday that U.S. officials have yet to hold conversations with Mohammed al-Bashir, the just-appointed head of Syria's transitional government.
"I don't have any conversations with al-Bashir to speak to," John Kirby, the National Security Council's coordinator for strategic communications, said during a gaggle with reporters. "I'm not aware of any conversations that anybody's had with him at this early stage," he added.
In a brief televised statement on Tuesday, al-Bashir, head of the Syrian Salvation Government formed in Idlib in 2017, said he would lead the transitional authority until March.
Kirby, for his part, was asked whether any conversations happened recently between Biden and President-elect Donald Trump on how the United States would cope with the situation in Syria.
"I don't have any additional conversations with President-elect Trump to speak to at this point, I would say that we remain in touch with ... the people he's designated as his key national security team leaders," Kirby said, adding that National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan has been having "ongoing conversations" with his would-be successor Mike Waltz. ■
