ACCRA, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has vowed to ensure a seamless transfer of power after Ghana's Electoral Commission (EC) declared John Dramani Mahama the winner of the just-concluded presidential election.

A statement released late Monday from the presidency announced that Akufo-Addo had called Mahama, leader of the opposition National Democratic Congress, to congratulate him on his victory.

According to the EC, Mahama secured 56.55 percent of the total valid votes, while Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, representing the ruling New Patriotic Party, garnered 41.61 percent.

"President Akufo-Addo expressed his commitment to ensuring a seamless transfer of power on Jan. 7, 2025, and looks forward to working with the president-elect and his team to achieve this goal," read the statement.

The Ghanaian incumbent president also commended the EC and the Ghanaian people for conducting a successful election, which he said reflects the enduring strength of the country's democracy.

Akufo-Addo urged Ghanaians to unite and work together to strengthen democracy and uphold the rule of law in the country.

Meanwhile, the president has invited the president-elect to a meeting at the seat of government Wednesday to initiate the transition process, according to the statement.

On Dec. 7, Ghanaians cast their ballots to elect a new president and 276 members of parliament.
